Menstrual Cramps


I can attest to taking Bikram Yoga. I have had the worst menstrual cycles and cramps (on a scale from 1-10 my cramps were a 10. Crawling on the floor, bent over, crying in pain cramps, endometriosis, blood clots, having to leave work early because my cramps were so bad month after month since I was 13. I am now 35 years old).

Wearing a tampon and a pad from the monthly bleeding; suffering each month and praying to the Lord about what I needed to do because I had suffered for so long and He was faithful and showed me Bikram Yoga. My cholesterol count was at 225 and I was 40 pounds overweight. Gyms were just not working well for me. I found myself getting frustrated each time I went because I had to use so many machines to work my whole body.

I tried Bikram Hot Yoga one time and I am hooked. My cholesterol has gone down to 202 without MEDICATION and I have lost 10 pounds. I now have fewer sinus infections, my cycle is at 3 days instead of 5 days, and my stomach is not as bloated during and before my cycle. Practicing Bikram Yoga during my menstrual cycle has been the best thing for me. It's rough at times but the benefits of not having to constantly take Tylenol for cramps has been great.

The last four weeks I did not take Yoga due to my schedule and my sister's wedding and I can tell you that my body felt horrible. I felt almost sick and I realized that Yoga is life changing for me. My appetite has changed. I don't eat as much and I am more conscious of what I eat.

As an African American woman I was skeptical at first. But now I so want my community to begin doing Bikram Yoga because I see the benefits in me. I see that the many ailments that our own community suffers from how Yoga could help. One day I may come to be a certified teacher and begin teaching in my community because Yoga is a health change for all of us. I will never in life go to another gym , I will never buy another exercise tape, or go to another aerobic class. I only take Yoga 3 times a week, and all the above has happened. I said to myself I would not take medicine for the rest of my life for ailments I could avoid or have another month of a bad cycle.

Don't get me wrong - Bikram Yoga is HARD! At times I have to force myself to go to my yoga class because I don't always like it. I am not one of those people who say it's great all the time. NO, sometimes I go and can't stand it. Other times I don't want to come back. But when I see my body changing, my stomach flattening, and my cycle better I go and go and go.

I am diabetic type 1 and have been injecting since 1989, when I was diadnosed age 6. I have been lucky to learn a great deal from my diabetes.

In March of 2002 my heart beat increased to 200 beats per minute. The electrical current in my heart malfunctioned due to the scar tissue from my 1985 heart attack. My good health from practicing Bikram yoga kept me alive.
