Sporadic ataxia

John had hernia surgery 5 years ago. After the surgery he had difficulty walking. His balance and coordination were off and he was struggling to walk. Over the years his walking has continued to decline. He was finally diagnosed with Sporadic ataxia, myoclonus, chorea and most recently mitochondrial disease. 4 weeks ago he took a turn for the worse. He was found unconscious on the floor at work and his body was in spasm. He was hospitalized for 4 days and then sent to rehab. His walking had declined to the point that he now had to use a walker.

When John was released from rehab, still not walking very well at all, I took him to a bikram yoga class. I live in Auburn, Ma and go to Boston's (Sam Goldman) studio. Sam was great in showing John how to do the 26 postures. John has been doing yoga for 2 weeks now and has progressed from doing all the standing postures while sitting in the chair to doing most of those same postures standing.

He gets regular massages to ease his muscle stiffness and this week was told by the massage therapist that his muscles had improved. She said that they weren't as tight and knotted as they had been and wanted to know what he was doing.

He has also seen improvement with the temperature in his legs. His legs get cold to the touch and then they ache. Since doing yoga his legs don't get as cold.

In March of 2002 my heart beat increased to 200 beats per minute. The electrical current in my heart malfunctioned due to the scar tissue from my 1985 heart attack. My good health from practicing Bikram yoga kept me alive.
